The Canary Project designed this public art event for “eARTh” – a global event in organized by 350.org in November 2010.  The piece was designed for the Cape Flats neighborhood of Khayelitsha and centered around a celebratory traditional lunch cooked at the site on parabolic solar cookers generously provided by South Africa’s Sunfire. The highly reflective solar cookers and participants seated along streaming cloth rays formed a unique composition of the sun that was photographed aerially.  After the art piece is complete, the solar cookers will be donated to schools in the community where they are used by trained staff for high volume solar cooking. The word Umngqusho refers to a local dish, which is rumored to be the favorite food of Nelson Mandela.
